Featured Sites: Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. Located at an elbow in the Animas River, Durango has been a gateway to southwestern Colorado’s riches since the last century. Durango means "water town", and was so named because of this lovely river. Over the past decade the city of Durango has changed, growing into one of the southwestern Colorado's most important cities. The first lodgings were built by the railroad and of those hotels the Strater Hotel still stand, but many hotels, bed and breakfasts are available. We invite you to come and enjoy the weather and explore the town of Durango, one of Colorado's most beautiful mountain towns. While in the area don't miss Mesa Verde National Park it offers visitors a spectacular view into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people. The culture represented at Mesa Verde reflects more than 700 years of history. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is also a must see! The rail line was originally constructed to haul silver & gold ore out of the San Juan Mountains, but now passengers enjoy the steam-engine powered ride through some of Colorado's most spectacular mountains.
